Elisabeth Sunday

AFRICA VI: The Tuareg Portfolios, 2005-2009

Elisabeth Sunday's work, spans 25 years. They are Mythopoetic Photographs from the Efe, (Pygmies) of the Ituri Rain Forest in Zaire; the Maasai and Turkana, from Kenya; the Dogon, from the Sahel region of Mali; the !Kung San People of the Kalahari Desert in central Botswana; Aboriginal elders from the Northeast Territory of Australia; Mystics and Healers from Thailand, Bali and India; and the Western Pacific Islanders from remote ocean atolls in Micronesia.

The people I have photographed over the years have told me their stories of interconnectedness with the land, to each other and to the ancestors. They know how to listen and respect the natural world as to not diminish it, since to do that, ones own self and life is diminished in kind. Through the bend in my mirror, I have found a way to visually translate their stories and share the universality of their messages.
